Preventing New Employees from Feeling Overwhelmed

But unfortunately, that’s what’s happening in many workplaces. The constant exposure to distressing and humiliating remarks, jokes and actions is workplace harassment. How can you tell that your colleague is suffering from harassment? Here are five tell-tale signs of harassment at the workplace.

1. Poor Performance

If you notice your colleague is performing poorly and is not turning up on time for work, it could be because of workplace abuse and harassment. If this is the case, you need to speak to them openly about their state. Let them know that they can trust you.

Some people may need a listening ear, while others need intense therapy depending on the extremity. Talk to them and know how you can help.

2. Behavioral Issues

Showing changes in behavior could mean that your colleague is dealing with harassment at the workplace. It can be anything from talking too loudly or frequently to being overly aggressive and even grabbing others by the arm while trying to walk past them. These behaviors are clear signs that they are trapped in a work environment wherein their personality is not given the respect it deserves by their colleagues or superiors.

If you notice this often happening with your colleague, it’s best to speak up and ask them whether there’s an issue going on at work. This will make them feel much better about themselves.

3. Harassment Complaints

If your colleague is constantly complaining about how they are being treated at work, it could be a clear indication that they are suffering from harassment. If your colleagues are regularly complaining about how they are being treated at work, that’s a clear indication that their working environment is not satisfying.

They feel unsafe and unsecured in their workplace. If you start noticing this, speak with them and help them remove the problem from their workplace.

4. Overall tension or aggression

If you notice that your colleague is always uptight and not being happy in the workplace, then chances are they might be going through some abuse at work. If this is the case, it’s best to ask them about their working environment and what’s wrong with it for them.

Given that dealing with harassment in the workplace can be difficult for people, they might even want to speak openly about their situation. Try to understand them and listen to them. You can also start a discussion on how to resolve workplace harassment or abuse.

5. Lack of Interest in their Work or Job

If a colleague is not interested in their job and forgets to do assignments, it could signal that their work environment is problematic. That’s because stress affects the way people perform tasks.

Conclusion

Sporadic instances of harassment are something that most people can relate to. They’re almost like a sign that you’re not the only one who’s been through something challenging. At their worst, these instances of harassment can become a social norm and cause an entire team to feel unsafe.

By recognizing these signs, you can help your colleague seek justice for harassment.
