‘Migrating to the cloud’ is seen as the solution to all kinds of problems. It is of course a useful step if you want to regularly scale up or down capacity, or if employees work from different locations.

Migrating to the cloud can be more challenging your are thinking, Don’t forget to consider following challenges before migrating to cloud.

Spend time planning the migration to the Cloud

Most companies will have to deal with it: migrating to the Cloud. Whether companies are looking to replace their local file server or migrate from one Cloud solution to another, there are challenges to consider. For example, has good planning been made and are the employees prepared to embrace the new situations?

Jumping blindly into the cloud or choosing a new Cloud solution without a solid strategy is dangerous and can take much longer than necessary. There are several factors that can affect how smooth the migration goes. From choosing the right Cloud solution with modern features to training your employees and a cost analysis, it is important to determine which steps to take and when to take them.

It is important to spend time looking for the provider that meets your needs. Determine what your (security) requirements are and discuss with various Cloud providers how the migration will proceed.

Ask the right questions to the Cloud provider

If you know what you need you can ask the right questions. Then you can better determine whether or not a Cloud provider is suitable. Do you get an unclear or even no answer to your questions? Then that often says something about the support you can expect when you are a customer.

Of course, it is very useful to find a Cloud provider that makes migrating to the cloud easier. There will always be questions you want to ask the Cloud provider so they can help you during all phases of the migration.

Help your employees during and after migrating to the cloud

When a change occurs in the workplace, especially when you introduce a new way of working, it is important to ensure that everyone knows how to use it. Don’t assume that your employees will immediately understand the new Cloud solution.

Set aside time to keep your employees informed of the new solution and ensure that the Cloud provider can offer training sessions to your staff. This will not only prevent many problems in the future, but will also ensure that your company gets the full potential from the Cloud. The last thing you want is for your employees to use (free) alternatives to share company files.

Take appropriate security measures

Even if you spend time training staff, you can still encounter situations that endanger your data. Think for example of accidentally deleting files, editing the wrong version and sharing files publicly. These situations cannot always be prevented, but can easily be remedied with the right Cloud solution.

So make an informed decision and choose a cloud solution that has the right security measures to minimize major problems as much as possible.

Avoid annual contracts

Finally, most business cloud providers bind companies to annual contracts. By the time you are in the midst of the cloud migration process, you might be wondering if you made the right choice? You may find an agreement you don’t want.

When migrating to the cloud, you have to take into account your goals and which provider you can best use to achieve them. Preferably choose a cloud provider that gives you a flexible contract.
